According to an advisor to the governor of the region, the strike occurred on the Daryivskyi bridge that crosses the Ingulets River, which was used by Russian troops for supplies. This happened just days after another bridge over the Dnieper was struck.
Serhiy Khlan, an official, posted the following Facebook message: "This is not yet the liberation Kherson, but it's a serious preparatory move in that direction. Every bridge is an opportunity for logistics, and our armed forces are skillfully eliminating the enemy system."
According to Russia's TASS news agency, the deputy head of the Russian-installed region authority stated that seven rockets from Western-supplied high-mobility artillery rocket system (HIMARS) had struck the bridge. However, the bridge was still functional.
Reuters could not independently verify the assertions of both sides.
In an attempt to turn the tide of war and to prepare for a counter-offensive, Ukraine has used long-range weapons supplied by the West to strike Russian ammunition dumps and supply lines.
Since its invasion on 24 February, Russia has seized large swathes in southern and eastern Ukraine.
